What should I know about interviews in the college application process?

I'm prepping for college interviews and I'm a bit nervous. Can anyone share insights on what colleges like Harvard look for during this part of the application process? Any tips on how to make a good impression?

The college interview is a chance for admissions officers to put a face to your application and for you to showcase your interest in their institution. When it comes to the interview process, even institutions as prestigious as Harvard, are looking for a few key elements:

Firstly, authenticity is critical. Interviewers want to learn more about you, not just the version of you that you think they want to see. Remain true to who you are, express your genuine perspectives, and share your real experiences. Trying to be someone you’re not can often be noticeable and could inadvertently give the wrong impression.

Preparation also goes a long way. Make sure to review all the materials you submitted in your application, as often, it will serve as the primary basis for the interviewer's questions. You should also research the school extensively, as demonstrating knowledge of and interest in the school can send a powerful message of your dedication and commitment.

Additionally, having a clear articulation of why you are interested in Harvard and what you could bring to their community is essential. Be prepared to discuss specific programs, classes, clubs, or opportunities at Harvard that align with your interests and aspirations can show an interviewer that you've done your homework.

Lastly, remember the interview goes both ways. It is not only a chance for them to learn more about you but also an opportunity for you to ask questions. Thoughtful, relevant queries about the school or the interviewer's experiences can show your sincere interest.

As for making a good impression, being punctual, dressing appropriately, and maintaining eye contact are always important. Don't forget to follow up with a thank-you note expressing your appreciation for the interviewer's time.

But, remember Harvard does not have interviews as a major part of their application process. In other words, the absence or the presence of interview doesn't have a significant impact on your admission decision.

Feel free to practice some of these tips for the interview process. You've got this! Let us know how it goes.
