What are the main stresses of the college admission process?

It sounds like you're really putting a lot of thought into this process, which is good! The college admission process can be quite daunting, with multiple stressors for most students. One of the main stressors often tends to be standardized testing. The thought of scores defining your academic capabilities can be nerve-wracking. However, remember that many schools have gone test-optional and are focusing more on the holistic aspect of your application.

Another major stressor is often writing essays. Plenty of students struggle with figuring out what to say and how to say it in order to make their application stand out. It's often comforting to know that colleges are genuinely interested in your story, not the 'fluff'. Rather than focusing on impressing the admissions officers, consider what experiences and thoughts you'd like to share, and what insights those experiences have given you.

The third significant stressor often is maintaining grades and participation in extracurriculars while juggling applications. This can appear like a giant balancing act but setting a schedule or plan for when and how you will complete your applications can be a game changer.

Lastly, the waiting period after submitting applications can also induce anxiety. Managing expectations and keeping in mind that there are many colleges where you can be happy and successful, can make this period easier to endure.

To handle these stresses, it's important to stay organized and start the process early. Think about creating a timeline or a checklist, keeping track of all your deadlines and requirements. Make time to relax and engage in activities that you enjoy. These can provide a much-needed mental break and stress relief. Lastly, don't hesitate to reach out for help, whether it is from a teacher, counselor, family member, or an online resource. You're definitely not alone in this journey!
