How does on-the-job training work for trade jobs?

I'm really interested in starting a trade job that offers on-the-job training. Can anyone break down how this usually works? Do you get paid while training, and how long does the training typically last?

It's a prime way to learn practical and technical skills necessary for the job. There's no one-size-fits-all as the length and structure can vary considerably based on the trade, but generally, it can range from a few weeks to several years.

Training often starts with basic tasks under the close supervision of a qualified and experienced tradesperson, commonly referred to as a journeyman or master. As you progress and demonstrate proficiency, you'll move on to increasingly complex tasks, giving you a well-rounded understanding of your trade.
