Do Trade Jobs Pay Well?

I'm looking into trade jobs as a career option after high school. I've heard they can be lucrative, but I'm uncertain about which trades might offer the best pay. Any insights or experiences with trade job salaries?

Trade jobs can indeed offer solid earning potential. However, salaries can vary significantly depending on the trade and level of experience.

For instance, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians often earn above-average salaries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, electricians had a median pay of $61,600 per year in 2023. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters earned a median salary of $61,500 in 2023, while HVAC technicians had a median pay of $57,300 per year.

Elevator installers and repairers are another example of a trade job with high earning potential. The median annual wage for elevator and escalator installers and repairers was $102,400 in May 2023.

Furthermore, many skilled trade jobs may provide you with the opportunity to work your way up to a high-paying position faster than a traditional four-year degree might. After completing an apprenticeship, which typically takes about 4-5 years, you can eventually become a fully licensed tradesperson and even own your own business.

However, keep in mind that these salaries can vary based on location, the size of the company, and your level of experience.

Last but not least, you don't usually have to worry about student loans when you enter a trade. This is because apprenticeships often pay you while you learn, rather than the other way around. This lack of debt can be a massive financial advantage over time.

Keep researching and exploring your interests to find the trade that resonates with you and meets your financial expectations. Good luck!
