How can teens get a ride along experience in skilled trades?

I'm a high school student interested in skilled trades. Do any opportunities exist for teens to do a ride along or shadow a professional to see what the work is like firsthand?

Absolutely, there are a few paths you can take to gain firsthand experience in the skilled trades as a teenager.

1. Get In Touch With Trade Unions: Trade Unions often have apprenticeship programs aimed at getting people into the industry. Many also conduct high school outreach, and they might be willing to arrange a ride along or job shadowing opportunity for high school students. Examples of such unions include the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) or United Association (UA) for Plumbers and Pipefitters.

2. Connect with Local Businesses: Small businesses, especially, may be open to the idea of job shadowing. You can approach local companies that work in the field you're interested in, explain your interest and ask if they offer any opportunities for high school students to shadow a professional.

3. Explore Vocational-Technical High Schools: Some vocational-technical high schools offer exploratory programs that allow students to experience various trades before selecting one to specialize in. If your current school doesn't offer such programs, these tech schools often have open houses where prospective students can visit.

4. Check Out Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs): Groups like SkillsUSA and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) often offer hands-on experiences and competitions related to skilled trades. While these experiences may not offer a full ride-along, they usually provide great opportunities to get your hands dirty and learn more about a trade.

Finally, please remember safety is paramount in these environments. Even if you're shadowing or observing, it's best to have appropriate attire and safety equipment, which will also reflect your professionalism. Good luck with your exploration!
