Exploring Skilled Trades careers in Maryland

I've been thinking about going straight into a skilled trade after high school instead of college. What do job prospects look like in Maryland? Are there local training programs or certifications that would help me get started?

Job prospects for skilled trades in Maryland are quite favorable. There's been a steady demand for skilled tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians, among others. For example, as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of electricians is projected to grow 11 percent from 2023 to 2033, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

As far as training programs and certifications are concerned, there are many avenues. Many of these trades require vocational training and then a period of apprenticeship. Here are a few specific options:

1. The Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program (MATP): This is state-sponsored and helps Marylanders earn while they learn. You could start an apprenticeship under a mentor in your trade of choice, earn a living wage, and learn industry skills simultaneously.

2. Lincoln Tech in Columbia, Maryland: Lincoln Tech offers Technical Career Training which includes programs in areas like Automotive Technology, Welding Technology, Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology among others.

3. North American Trade Schools in Baltimore, Maryland: This school provides tradesmen education in areas like HVAC, electrical, welding, and construction, among others.

Before committing to a program, be sure to do your research about its credibility, the success of its graduates, and whether it will prepare you for the required licensure in your chosen trade in Maryland.

Remember, while choosing a skilled trade as a career, practical experience is invaluable. Consider job-shadowing or interning in your chosen field to get a sense of the work environment and day-to-day responsibilities.
