Hiring surge for skilled trade jobs: What's out there?

I'm considering going straight into a skilled trade after high school. Are there certain trades where hiring is strong right now? It’d be great to know which industries or companies are actively looking for people.

Indeed, some skilled trades are seeing a significant surge in hiring. Here are some examples:

1. Electricians: With the rapid advancements in technology and an increase in construction projects, electricians are in high demand. The need for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings fuels this demand.

2. HVAC Technicians: Climate control systems have become standard for both residential and commercial premises. As HVAC systems need regular maintenance and replacements, HVAC technicians continue to experience substantial job growth.

3. Plumbers and Pipefitters: Plumbing jobs are also in high demand, largely because they are necessity-based. Additionally, as new construction continues and older systems need replacement or updates, prospects are good for plumbers and pipefitters.

4. Welders: With projects in construction, manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace industries always needing talented welders, this trade continues to experience steady demand.

5. Heavy Equipment Operators: Infrastructure projects and construction works are perpetually ongoing and this leads to a steady demand for skilled heavy equipment operators.

Companies such as Bechtel, Fluor Corp, and Turner Construction are often on the lookout for skilled trade workers for their various projects. Additionally, utility companies and local municipalities frequently have openings for such positions. It can also be beneficial to look towards smaller local companies or consider starting an apprenticeship with a local union.

Remember, having a trade skill can provide job stability and good pay, but these jobs can also be physically demanding and may at times require working in challenging conditions. It's advisable to research each trade, and even shadow professionals in that industry, to have a clear idea of the work involved.
