Trade School as an Option?

I can't seem to find a clear path for what to do after high school. Given the opportunities in the trades, would going to a trade school be a good idea to secure a job? Any advice is appreciated!

It's excellent that you're considering all possible options for your future! Here's a bit on the upsides and potential downsides of trade school.

One of the many advantages of trade school is the focus on practical skills that directly translate to job opportunities. The training is often job-specific, such as becoming a plumber, electrician, or automotive technician, which can lead to a direct career after graduation. This differs from a more traditional college path, which can involve more general education that might not necessarily lead directly into a specific job.

Another pro of trade school is the financial element. Trade school programs are generally shorter and less expensive than traditional four-year college degrees, which can mean less student debt. Additionally, there's a high demand for skilled tradespeople, so you could see a good return on your investment quite quickly.

However, one potential downside is the lack of transferability in the skills learned. If you decide later on that you want to switch careers, you might have a harder time transitioning than someone who has a more generalized education. Plus, some careers have limited advancement opportunities without additional degrees or certifications.

It's also worth noting that while having a trade can be very lucrative, potential earnings depend on the specific industry you choose. For instance, some trades, such as construction and electric work, may pay significantly more than others.

At the end of the day, the decision will depend on what you're passionate about and what you want from your career. If you enjoy working with your hands, solving problems, and helping people, then a trade could be a wonderful fit. If you're still unsure, try doing some job-shadowing or internships to see if a particular trade feels right to you!
