Classes for an Aspiring Veterinarian

Hi everyone! I want to become a veterinarian in the future, but I'm not sure which classes I should be taking in high school to best prepare for it. Does anyone have suggestions on which courses would be most helpful? Thanks!

Hello! It's great that you've set your sights on becoming a veterinarian. While most of the intense coursework for your career will be done in college and veterinary school, there are still several classes you can take in high school to build a strong foundation.

1. Science: Focus on taking advanced biology, chemistry, and physics courses, as well as any electives related to animal science, environmental science, or life sciences. AP courses in these subjects, if offered, would be helpful to challenge yourself and prepare for college-level work.

2. Math: Strong mathematical skills are important for a career in veterinary medicine. Make sure to take algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus if possible.

3. English: Good communication is essential for future veterinarians. Take advanced English courses to hone your writing and speaking skills.

4. Foreign Language: Being multilingual can be an asset in the veterinary field. Consider taking a foreign language course, especially if you have a specific interest in working with a certain community or in a different country.

5. Electives: Depending on your school, you may have access to additional electives that could benefit your veterinary aspirations. Animal science, agriculture, and anatomy courses are examples of subjects that could provide helpful knowledge.

Lastly, you might want to explore extracurricular activities related to animals or science to build hands-on experience. Join a school club or volunteer at a local animal shelter, vet clinic, or wildlife center. Expanding your experiences beyond the classroom will not only strengthen your college applications but will also help you confirm that veterinary medicine is the right path for you. Best of luck!
