Do you need trade school for specific jobs?

I'm curious if there are specific jobs that you can't get without going through trade school. If you've taken this path, what kind of job did you end up in, and was trade school necessary?

Many professions indeed require specific vocational training or trade school education, often due to the technical and practical skills these jobs require. Professions like electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, automotive technicians, welders, and many healthcare careers like licensed practical nurses and dental hygienists often require a trade school diploma or certification.

Take electricians as an example. To become an electrician, one must typically attend a trade school or complete an apprenticeship, and some states may require even additional licensing exams. The skills needed for this type of job, such as understanding electrical codes and safely installing and maintaining wiring and electrical systems, usually are acquired through formal training and hands-on experience under supervision.

Healthcare careers like licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and dental hygienists also require technical training. In these careers, trade school programs can provide students with the scientific knowledge and clinical skills necessary to perform various patient care duties, and they're often state-regulated, requiring licensure exams.

However, bear in mind that while many trade careers require specific vocational training, the necessity of trade school can vary depending on local regulations, employer preferences, and the specific path you want to take within a profession. While attending a trade school can provide valuable training, apprenticeships, workshops, and on-the-job training are also viable options for learning a trade. Doing research about the specific requirements of your target profession and location can provide more clarity.
