What should my college application timeline look like junior year?

I'm a junior in high school and just starting to think about college applications. Can anyone share a timeline or checklist of what I should be doing this year to stay on track?

Sure, happy to give you a rundown! Here's a rough timeline that could help you manage your college application process during your junior year.

Fall

Research and build your list of colleges: Take this time to research colleges that interests you and that match your academic profile.

Start preparing for standardized tests: If you haven't already, review the basic content and format of the SAT or ACT and start planning how and when to prepare. Aim to take your first SAT or ACT by the winter of your junior year so you'll have time to retake it if necessary.

Keep working hard in your classes: Your junior year grades are essential since they're the most recent full year of grades that colleges will see.

Winter

Take the SAT or ACT: Try to take your first test before the spring so you have time to retake it if you need to.

Visit colleges: If you can and it's safe to do so, plan campus visits or virtual tours where possible. Attend college admission information sessions happening in your city or online.

Consider your major: Spend time thinking about what you might want to major in, as this might influence the colleges you apply to.

Spring

Prepare for and take AP exams: If you're enrolled in any Advanced Placement (AP) courses, start reviewing for the exams in May.

Solidify and deepen extracurricular involvement: Colleges want to see depth and leadership in a few areas, not just being minimally involved in many activities.

Ask for recommendation letters: If there are teachers you'd like to write a letter of recommendation, ask them at the end of junior year, so they have time to prepare.

Summer

Start on your college essays: Draft your personal statement and begin working on school-specific supplements.

Plan for application submission: Review application platforms (like Common Application, Coalition Application) and deadlines (Regular Decision, Early Action, Early Decision).

Remember that every student's timeline might look slightly different depending on individual circumstances, but in general, this should give you a good starting point. The main goal is to meet all your deadlines and give yourself plenty of time to put together the best application you can. Good luck!
