What are the typical fees for late college applications?

I might need to submit a late application to a college or two. Do colleges usually charge extra fees for late applications? If so, how much are these fees typically, and is there any way to avoid them?

Each college and university has its own policy when it comes to late applications. Many institutions have strict deadlines and typically don't accept late applications except under very special circumstances. However, it's not uncommon for some colleges to offer a "rolling admissions" process where applications are considered as they come in, until all spots are filled. This can sometimes extend past the regular application deadline.

If a college does accept late applications, there may or may not be an associated late fee. This entirely depends on the institution's policy. Some charge an extra amount on top of the regular application fee, which can range from $15 to $75 or more, while others might merely continue to charge the regular application fee.

As to your question about avoiding late application fees, there are a few things you can do:

1. Submit your application on time: This is, of course, the most effective way.

2. Seek an application fee waiver: Many colleges offer fee waivers for eligible students. Generally, if you're eligible for a school’s application fee waiver, there’s a good chance you're eligible for a late fee waiver as well. Usually, this involves demonstrating some sort of financial hardship or need.

3. Apply during the application extension period: Some colleges extend their application deadline, often without announcing it publicly. If you apply during this extension period, the application is not technically late, and thus, no late fee may apply.

However, you should contact your colleges of interest directly to ask about their specific policies on late applications and any associated fees. Remember that applying late can sometimes have negative implications for your chances of admission, as many colleges review applications and make decisions on a rolling basis. Plan ahead whenever possible to give your application the best possible chance for success.
