Does GPA transfer when transferring colleges?

If I transfer to a new college, will my current GPA transfer over with me? Or does it reset when I start at the new institution? I'm trying to figure out how much my current grades will impact the transfer.

While your credits may transfer from your previous institution to your new one, your GPA typically will not. The credits for the courses you took will usually transfer if they are similar to courses offered at the new college or university and you earned acceptable grades. However, your grade point average usually won't.

Your GPA at your new institution often starts fresh, meaning it's based solely on the coursework you complete there. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. If you have a low GPA at your previous institution, it can give you a fresh start to improve it. Conversely, if your previous GPA was high, you will have to work to maintain it at your new institution.

However, while your GPA does typically start over when you transfer, your previous GPA will still be relevant. When you're applying to transfer, the college will look at the grades you earned at your previous institution. So, your grades at your first school can affect your chances of getting accepted as a transfer student and the amount of financial aid you receive, among other things. Plus, graduate schools and employers may look at the transcripts from all colleges or universities you attended when you apply, so your grades at your first school can still matter in the future.

Again, different institutions may have varying policies, but this is the general practice. You may want to reach out directly to the registrar's office or transfer admissions at the schools you're interested in for the most accurate information.
