Do Community College Credits Transfer to App State?

I'm thinking about enrolling in a community college before transferring to Appalachian State University. Does anyone know if they accept community college credits and if there's a limit to how many can transfer?

Appalachian State University does indeed accept credits earned from an accredited community college. App State believes in the importance of community colleges as stepping stones for students pursuing higher education and thus provides various resources to facilitate the transfer process.

When it comes to the number of credits you can transfer, it varies depending on your specific situation, but generally, no more than 66 credits from a two-year institution can be applied to your degree. Often, credits from general education courses or courses related to your intended major stand the best chance of being accepted. However, each case is subject to an official evaluation by the university's transfer articulation team.

It's also important to note that transferring credits doesn't automatically mean those credits will count toward your specific degree requirements. That will depend on the courses you have taken and what degree you're aiming for.

To give you a more tangible feel for how this might work, let's take an example. Say you're an aspiring Geography major who took Introduction to Physical Geography and Cultural Anthropology classes at your community college. Usually, both these courses could transfer and count towards your major or the general education requirements at App State.

Lastly, before enrolling in community college classes, you might want to consult this transfer course list provided by App State to see which community college courses are likely to transfer: https://bannerweb.appstate.edu/pls/APP/bzsktran.P_Select_type

However, keep in mind that the final decision regarding credit transfer lies with the university.

So, it also would be beneficial for you to schedule a meeting with an academic advisor or transfer counselor at App State before you begin your community college classes. They can provide guidance on course selection to optimize credit transferability and to help streamline your transition.
