Do community service hours done before high school matter for college apps?

I started doing community service in middle school. Do those hours count on my college applications, or do I only list what I've done in high school? I'm not sure how far back I should go.

Typically, colleges are most interested in your activities and accomplishments during high school, particularly those that have continued throughout multiple years or have demonstrated significant impact and leadership. This is because your experiences in high school are usually the most relevant and recent examples of your personal growth, talents, and passions.

However, if your middle school community service demonstrates continuity into high school or aligns with a consistent theme or interest in your life, it could be valuable to mention, especially if it shows a long-term commitment to a cause or organization that you then continued in high school.

In sum, while middle school community service might not be included in the formal list of activities on your college application, it can be beneficial if discussed within other elements of your application, such as your personal statement or additional information section, given it effectively communicates your early commitment and dedication to community service.
