Do WGU credits transfer to other colleges?

I'm interested in taking classes at WGU, but worried if the credits will transfer if I change schools. Has anyone managed to transfer their credits from WGU successfully?

WGU, or Western Governors University, is a regionally accredited institution which theoretically should make credits transferable to other similar institutions. However, transfer policies are highly individual to each school and even to each specific program within the same school. It also depends on the course equivalencies between WGU and the school you're considering.

For example, if you took a General Biology course at WGU, and the university you wish to transfer to also has a General Biology class with similar course content, there's a higher chance that those credits could transfer. But a very specialized or unique class at WGU might not have an equivalent at the other university, making the transfer less likely.

It's also important to note that some universities cap the number of transfer credits they accept. Others only take a certain number of credits from certain types of institutions. Even though WGU is accredited, you'll want to verify with the potential receiving university whether they accept credits from WGU.

To gain the most reliable information, I would recommend reaching out to the admission or registrar's offices of the colleges you may be interested in transferring to. They can provide specific details regarding their policy on transferring credits from WGU or similar institutions. In doing so, you can plan your education journey confidently knowing that your hard work at WGU will be recognized, should you decide to transfer.
