Does GPA from community college transfer to a university?

I'm planning to start at a community college before transferring to a university. I'm wondering if my GPA from community college classes will transfer to the university and impact my GPA there. Any insight on how this works?

The GPA you earned at community college won't directly impact your university GPA. Each institution will calculate its own GPA based on the courses you take at that specific institution.

However, most universities will look at your community college GPA during the admission process. They'll consider your academic performance at the community college when deciding whether to admit you as a transfer student. If your community college GPA is strong, it can improve your chances of being admitted, especially if you're applying to competitive schools.

Once you're admitted and enrolled at the university, you'll start with a clean slate, GPA-wise. Only the grades you earn in courses at the university will count toward your university GPA. However, the credits from the courses you took at community college should transfer, assuming they're applicable to your university degree program. This means you can start your university studies part way through your degree program, and possibly graduate sooner.

Remember that each university has a different policy regarding transfer students and GPA, so it's a good idea to reach out to the universities you're interested in to understand their specific policies. It's also crucial to perform well at the community college level to increase your chances of being admitted as a transfer student.

Lastly, your the grades from your community college may factor into your cumulative GPA, which includes grades from all post-secondary institutions attended. This could be relevant for graduate school applications or for certain honors or awards.
