Does GPA transfer to another college when you transfer?

If I transfer from one college to another, does my GPA from the first school transfer to the new one, or do I start fresh? Trying to figure out how this affects my academic record.

While every college may have its own policies, typically, your GPA does not transfer when you move to a new school. The GPA you earned at your previous institution won’t directly affect your GPA at your new college. However, your grades from the previous institution will still likely be taken into account during the admission process, and sometimes for course placement or credit allotment once you’re in.

Once you start at your new school, you generally build a new GPA from scratch based on the courses you take there. That means that if you had a high GPA at your old school, you'll need to maintain good grades at your new school to keep it, and if you had a low GPA at your old school, you have a fresh opportunity to boost it.

Also, note that all of your college-level academic history may be taken into account for certain post-graduate opportunities, like grad school applications or job opportunities that require transcript reviews. It's important to maintain good academic standing wherever you are to keep your options open in the future.

In any case, be sure to review the transfer credit policy of the specific school you're transferring to or consult with the admissions office directly for clarification.
