How many times can college players transfer?

I'm a bit confused about the rules for transferring in college sports. How many times is a college player allowed to transfer without any penalties? Does it differ by sport or division?

According to the new rules enacted by the NCAA in 2021, athletes in all sports are allowed to transfer one time without having to sit out a year of competition, or what's often called the "transfer penalty."

Before this rule change, players in football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and men's ice hockey had to sit out for a year after transferring schools. But now, athletes in all sports have the opportunity to transfer once without penalty. However, if they choose to transfer a second time, they would have to sit out a season unless they receive a waiver from the NCAA.

Do note that this rule applies across all divisions (D1, D2, D3). Also, the athlete must be academically eligible, not under disciplinary suspension, and receive a transfer release from their previous school.

It's always a good idea for student-athletes considering a transfer to thoroughly discuss their options and potential impacts with their coaches, academic advisors, and family. Transferring can bring its own set of challenges, so it's important to make sure it's the right decision academically, athletically, and personally.
