Can community college GPA transfer to a new school?

When transferring from a community college to a four-year university, does the GPA I've earned transfer with my credits? Or do I start over with a new GPA at the university? Just trying to figure out how my academic history moves with me.

The credits you've earned at your community college will usually transfer to a four-year university, especially if you've worked with an advisor to ensure that your community college classes align with the requirements at your future four-year institution. However, your specific GPA usually does not carry over and you often start with a fresh GPA at your new college.

Here's why: GPAs are calculated differently at different institutions due to factors such as grading scales, course weighting, and institutional policies. Therefore, to maintain fairness and consistency within a specific institution, most universities reset your GPA. It's important to note that while your GPA won't carry over, the admissions department at your new school will still consider your community college GPA during their decision-making process.

That being said, each university has its own policies regarding transferring grades and GPAs, so it's a good idea to reach out directly to the prospective school or look on their website for more detailed information. It helps to know their policies as you proceed with your academic planning and application process.

Lastly, keep in mind that even though your GPA starts fresh, maintaining a strong academic performance at your new institution is still crucial, especially if you're striving for honors recognition or planning on grad school in the future.
