Can my community college GPA transfer?

If I attend community college for a year or two, will my GPA transfer along with my credits if I decide to move to a four-year institution later? I’d love to know how this works!

In most cases, when you transfer from a community college to a four-year institution, your credits will transfer but your GPA will not. This means that the actual grades you received for your courses at the community college will not affect your GPA at your new institution. You will start with a clean slate in terms of GPA at your new school.

However, it's worth noting that the grades you earn at your community college are still incredibly important. Four-year institutions will look at the grades you received for the transferred credits during the admissions process. They want to see that you not only took relevant courses, but that you also performed well in them. Colleges often have minimum GPA requirements for transfer applicants, so it's crucial to do well in your classes at the community college to boost your chances of admission to a four-year institution.

Lastly, it's important to remember that not all credits may transfer. This depends mostly on the four-year college you're transferring to and the equivalency between the courses taken at your community college and those offered at the four-year institution. The best course of action is to be proactive, plan your coursework carefully, and keep advising staff in the loop about your intentions to transfer. Make sure to keep copies of syllabi and coursework, as some colleges might want to review these in order to grant credit for specific courses.

In essence, while your GPA from community college won't "transfer" in the technical sense, your academic performance in community college remains a vital factor in the transfer application process and the possible transfer of credits.
