Transferring with an AA from Sierra College for Computer Science?

I'm considering starting at Sierra College with an AA in Computer Science, but I want to know if it's a good starting point for transferring to a 4-year university. Has anyone done this, and how was your experience?

Certainly, beginning at a community college and then transferring to a 4-year university is a respected and common path that many students take for a range of reasons. It can be a cost-effective way to complete your bachelor's degree while also allowing you to focus on your foundational coursework in a smaller class environment.

Sierra College offers an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Computer Science. The transfer to a 4-year institution under the California's Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) program guarantees you admission into the California State University (CSU) system (as long as you meet certain eligibility requirements, like earning above a minimum GPA) where you could continue to pursue your Computer Science major.

Community college allows you to draft a comprehensive transfer plan. Counselors and advisors can help you research potential four-year institutions, understand the specific transfer requirements, and ensure your credits will be accepted by that institution. It's also worth mentioning that many four-year institutions appreciate transfer students as they bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the campus community.

In terms of preparing for transfer, your curriculum at Sierra College will provide you with foundational knowledge in computer programming and data structures which are key requisites for advanced computer science courses. Do well in your courses and consider getting involved in extracurricular activities related to your intended major if some exist available, as they can provide supplemental learning opportunities and strengthen your application.

Do be aware that this pathway at Sierra College leads to an AS, not an AA. While the school does offer an AA in computer science, that degree is not part of the program designed specifically for students looking to transfer. An AS covers similar material to an AA, but typically has a more technical focus, whereas an AA is slightly more interdisciplinary, so do keep that distinction in mind, and don't hesitate to reach out to Sierra College directly if you have specific questions about the differences in these two programs.

If you're planning to transfer to highly selective institutions or outside of the California public schools, remember to check with each specific school's transfer policies. Although many do accept community college credits, they might have specific requirements or recommendations for community college students. Keep your end goal in mind as you start at Sierra College and use it to inform your academic and extracurricular planning.
