When do college credits expire for transfer purposes?

I have some old credits from a community college and I'm worried they might expire. Is there a time limit for how long college credits stay valid if I want to transfer them to another school?

The good news is that college credits themselves don't expire. Once you have successfully completed a course, your earned credits will always exist. However, the catch is whether another college or university will accept those credits, especially if those credits are quite old.

Individual institutions set their own policies on transfer credits, and these can vary widely. Some colleges may place a time limit, typically between 5-10 years, for accepting credits, especially for certain majors like technology or the sciences where knowledge evolves quickly. This is to ensure that the knowledge and skills you gained are still current and relevant in your field of study.

Sometimes, even if older courses are not accepted for credit in your intended major, they can still potentially count as elective credits. Your best course of action would be to contact the registrar's office at your intended institution to discuss your transfer credits and see how they could potentially be applied.

Keep in mind also that some schools will want to see the syllabus from your past courses to help them determine whether the material covered matches up with their programs. It could be beneficial to collect any old syllabi or materials from these courses to help with this process.

Lastly, don't forget to have an official transcript sent directly from your previous institution to your new one. This is generally required to formally evaluate and credit any transfer courses.
