Any insights on Amherst College's transfer policy?

I'm considering transferring to Amherst College and want to understand their transfer policy better. Are there specific courses or credits they typically don't accept? Any experiences or advice on this topic?

Amherst College is known for being relatively transfer-friendly with a strong commitment to diversifying its student body. However, understanding Amherst College's transfer credit policy can indeed be a bit complex.

In terms of specific courses or credits, Amherst generally accepts credits earned at other accredited post-secondary institutions, but there are some exceptions. You should note that courses must be comparable in nature, content, and level to those offered in the liberal arts curriculum at Amherst.

The college does not accept credits for the following types of courses: pre-college or developmental courses, vocational and technical training courses, and courses that are primarily practical, professional, or experiential in nature—such as studio and performance art, journalism, business, or education.

Also, they do not accept courses with grades lower than a C or pass/fail courses unless the pass is equivalent to a C or better. In addition, credits from foreign institutions must be validated by World Education Services or a similar evaluation service.

Keep in mind, however, that gaining transfer credits and actually transferring into the college as a student are two different processes. Acceptance of transfer credits does not automatically imply admission to the college.

As for transfer admissions, Amherst accepts a small number of transfer students each year and the acceptance rate is highly competitive. In 2023, for example, the acceptance rate was about 10%. Successful transfer applicants usually present strong evidence of academic achievement at their current college or university.

Remember, transferring schools is not just about credits and ecosystem operational details, but also about fit - does the college's environment, curriculum, and community actively support your academic and personal goals? I'd recommend reaching out to Amherst's admissions office or attending a virtual info session to get your questions answered!

Best of luck with your transfer process!
