Guidelines for transferring from American River College to a UC

I want to transfer from American River College to a UC school. What are the general requirements for UC transfers? Are there particular courses I need or agreements I should know about to make this happen?

In order to transfer from a California community college, like American River College, to a University of California (UC) school, you'll need to follow a few general guidelines.

1. Meet the Basic Admission Requirements: UC requires that you complete at least 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC-transferable credit. Note, however, that no more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/No Pass. You should have at least a 2.4 GPA in your UC-transferable classes (2.8 if you're a nonresident).

2. Complete Your Coursework: Before transferring, you should complete the following UC-transferable course pattern with a grade of C or better in each course:

- Two transferable courses in English composition

- One transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning

- Four transferable college courses in at least two of the following subject areas: the arts and humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the physical and biological sciences

3. Follow an Articulation Agreement, Like IGETC or TAG: Programs like the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) may be helpful. IGETC provides a clear pathway to meet lower-division general education requirements for the UC system. TAG is a formal, written understanding between specific UC campuses and California community colleges. It guarantees admission to a specific UC campus if you meet certain requirements.

Remember, all these are general guidelines. Each UC campus and major have their own specific requirements. It's important to consult with a transfer advisor and research the specific requirements of the UC campus and the major you're interested in. Make a plan, including which courses to take and when to apply, so you can increase your chances of a successful transfer. Good luck!
