I'm currently at Montgomery College and looking to transfer to American University. Does anyone have advice on the transfer process or know the GPA requirements? Any personal experiences would be helpful!
Hello!
Great to hear that you're considering American University (AU) as a transfer destination. As a transfer student, one of the primary factors that AU will look at is your college GPA. While AU does not publish a specific GPA threshold for transfer students, successful applicants generally have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, with more competitive applicants having GPAs above 3.5.
The transfer process at AU is straight-forward. Along with your application, you'll need to submit official transcripts from all colleges you have attended, and they also require a College Report form to be filled out by a school official at your current college (like an academic advisor or registrar). This form provides AU with information about your official academic standing at your current college. Additionally, a recommendation letter from a professor or academic advisor is required.
In terms of credit, AU requires each course to be at least 3 semester hours or 4.5 quarter hours to be transferable, and the course needs to have been graded a C or better. Do keep in mind that AU has a residency requirement, where at least 45 credit hours must be completed directly at American University.
As for personal experiences, while I can't provide that, it's worth noting that many transfer students have found networking with professors and getting involved in club activities very helpful for their transition.
Remember, each person's transfer process can be unique though, so definitely reach out to AU's admissions department or your current academic advisor at Montgomery College if you have more specific questions. Best of luck with your transfer journey!
