What does 'contributing to the college community' mean on scholarship apps?

I'm working on a scholarship application, and there's a section asking how I plan to 'contribute to the college community.' Can anyone explain what they're looking for? Should I mention clubs, volunteer work, or something else?

When scholarship applications or college admissions officers ask how you will contribute to the college community, they're generally looking for two primary things: your unique background (including personal characteristics, experiences, values, etc.), and how will you share this uniqueness to enrich the campus life.

In answering, think about your interests, skills, hobbies, and experiences that differentiate you from others and how you can use those to positively influence those around you in a college setting. This can come in a variety of forms, often categorized into intellectual, social, cultural, or service contributions.

1. Intellectual Contributions: This could refer to a unique academic interest or passion. For example, if you are passionate about environmental conservation, perhaps you aim to start a regular seminar series covering latest developments in climate change or start a campus-wide recycling initiative.

2. Social Contributions: If you're someone known for your leadership qualities or you enjoy creating connections between people, perhaps you would excel in organizing events or creating new clubs that help foster a sense of community and create opportunities for social interaction.

3. Cultural Contributions: This refers to how you can bring diverse perspectives, customs, or traditions to the table. If you're from a distinct culture or background, you can make significant contributions by sharing your experiences, leading cultural awareness programs, or even starting a club related to your culture.

4. Service Contributions: This speaks to volunteer work or community service. If you are passionate about a cause and have volunteered, you can extend this same spirit to the college community through similar volunteer initiatives, service-based clubs, or charity events.

Creativity is key, and it's always a good idea to provide solid examples from your high school experiences that support your plans. Just remember to focus on the value that these contributions will bring to others.
