Should I include community college classes on my college application?

I'm taking a few classes at a community college while finishing high school. Should I list these on my college application, or is it not necessary? Will they impact my transcript or application in a positive way?

Sure, you should definitely include community college classes on your college application! By taking community college classes during high school, you're demonstrating initiative and a willingness to challenge yourself beyond what your high school may offer. This proactive educational engagement can impress admissions officers.

In terms of logistic, you can typically report these classes in the coursework section of your application, much as you would for your high school classes. Additionally, your final community college transcript will need to be sent to the colleges to which you're applying.

It's worth noting however, these classes are not going to be viewed identically to university-level courses taken at a four-year institution or rigorous high school courses such as APs or IBs. This is due to the curriculum and level of competition at community colleges being typically less rigorous than at four-year colleges/universities. Nonetheless, taking and doing well in these classes can demonstrate your initiative to take on more difficult or specialized courses. Plus, these classes could potentially provide credits toward your degree, depending on the course and college policy, which can save you time and money.

Each institution can weigh these classes differently, but generally, they will positively impact your application as they show curiosity, time management skills, and an enthusiasm to learn beyond your high school curriculum.
