How does transferring to Bennington College work?

I'm exploring the option of transferring to Bennington College. Can anyone share insights on how the transfer application process works there? What should I focus on when preparing my application?

Transferring to colleges like Bennington can be an excellent way to better align your academic and personal goals with a college campus and culture that fits your needs.

Bennington College accepts transfer applications for both Fall and Spring semesters. The deadlines typically are March 15 for Fall semester and November 1 for Spring. You will need to submit your application via The Common Application, which includes your transfer college report, a transcript from your current institution, and a final high school transcript.

Letters of recommendation, preferably from professors who have taught you recently, will be crucial in helping to affirm your academic abilities, convey your classroom demeanor, and your collaboration skills. Two letters of recommendation are required. Additionally, your transfer essay will be important to showcase your voice and reasons for wanting to transfer to Bennington.

I would suggest visiting the campus if possible, or attending any available virtual events, as it could give you insights about Bennington's unique academic philosophy and may help you prepare your application. Keep in mind that while this may help you understand the school better, Bennington does not track demonstrated interest, so this will not directly impact your admission decision.

Remember to also have a chat with your current college advisor or registrar's office to know which of your credits can be transferred. Bennington College grants credit for courses in which a grade of “C” or better has been earned. But, you should also know that the faculty determines how transfer credits will fit into the Bennington Plan, so there is no certainty until after admission about which credits will transfer.

Best of luck with your application. Transferring can be a big decision, but it can also be a rewarding one if it helps you better align your education with your goals.
