Transferring from Broward College architecture to FIU

I'm currently studying architecture at Broward College and looking at FIU as my next move. Does anyone know what the transfer plan looks like and what requirements I should be aware of?

The process of transferring from Broward College to FIU for Architecture is quite direct, but there are still important details to be aware of.

Firstly, it would be beneficial for you to ensure that the courses you've undertaken at Broward are transferrable credits towards your program at FIU. It is also important to ensure that you've completed the AA degree which includes all the general education requirements at FIU.

For the School of Architecture at FIU, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is typically required. However, admission to the Department of Architecture’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Architecture is selective and competitive. The department’s Admissions Committee reviews applicants based on the overall strength of the academic record, including grade trends in college preparatory, studio art, and math/science courses.

As you are a part-time or full-time student at Broward, the university would categorize you as a lower-division transfer student. While your Associate’s degree will make you eligible to apply, you would be expected to have completed prerequisite courses related to design, computer graphics, calculus, and physics—besides the general university Core Curriculum—before moving on to major coursework in architecture at FIU.

Additionally, as a transfer student, you should be prepared to submit a portfolio. Although it is not a requirement for transfer students, a portfolio may be requested during the review process and it can only bolster your candidacy.

Don't forget to pay attention to application deadlines. Generally, FIU has a priority deadline of November 1 for the spring semester and May 1 for the fall semester.

As the transfer process can be somewhat complex, I would recommend getting in contact with FIU's transfer advisors or the School of Architecture's advisors to ensure that you meet all qualifications and deadlines. They can provide you with the most accurate and personalized advice.

Ultimately, creating a transfer report with your Broward College advisor can be immensely beneficial, as they can guide you on courses to take that will fit FIU's architecture program requirements and increase the smoothness of your transition between the two institutions.
