Classifying Community College Courses on UC Application

I'm applying to the UC system and have taken several courses at a community college. How do I correctly classify these courses in the application? Any tips on what boxes to check off?

You will account for your community college courses under the "Colleges Attended" section in the UC application. When you get to the "Academics" section, you’ll see the "Colleges Attended" tab. Click "Add School" and start to type in the name of your community college. It should come up from the drop-down menu.

Afterward, in the "Transcript Entry" tab, you'll enter in all the courses you’ve taken at each college, including those from the community college. You must manually input all of your classes and grades. Make sure to have an up-to-date transcript on hand so you don't accidentally miss a course or misspell a course title. Here's what you need to know when filling out the course names:

1. Course Level – If you took the course at a community college, it is most likely going to be classified as "Lower Division."

2. Course Name – This should exactly match what's on your transcript.

3. Subject Area – The system should auto-fill this, but make sure it’s correct.

Also, double-check to ensure your courses are UC-transferable. You can find this information on assist.org which lists all transferable courses between community colleges and UC campuses. The UC application only wants you to list courses that are transferable.

Lastly, you need to designate how each course will apply to your undergraduate degree in the "Course Category" tab. This is where subjects like English, Math, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Arts, and Languages come into play. Choose the category that most closely aligns with your course. Checking this against your intended school's general education requirements could help ensure you're choosing the correct category.

This might sound like a tedious process, but being meticulous here is essential. Schools do check these against your official transcript so a minor error might lead to a delay in your application review.
