Santa Monica College Application Process

I'm planning to apply to Santa Monica College and wondering what the application process entails. Are there any important deadlines or steps I should be aware of to ensure my application is submitted correctly?

Applying to Santa Monica College (SMC), is a pretty straightforward process. SMC has a rolling admissions policy, which means you can apply at any time for the upcoming semester. However, they recommend submitting your application at least 2 months before the beginning of the semester to ensure adequate time for processing and course registration.

Here are the basic steps of the application process:

1. Online Application: You need to create an account at the California Community College portal, which is called OpenCCC if you don't have one. Once you have an account, you can start the application process at CCCApply. You'll be required to provide basic information about yourself, your educational goals, and your academic history.

2. Orientation: After your application is accepted, you'll need to participate in an online orientation; this is mandatory for all new students. The orientation will provide lots of helpful information about the college, its resources, and tips for your success.

3. Assessment: You'll need to take an assessment for English and Math courses to ensure you're placed in the right level. The college usually uses your high school transcripts for this, but alternative methods like Guided Self Placement may be used, especially if you've been out of school for a while.

4. Counseling: You'll then have an individual educational planning session with a college counselor to help map out your coursework for your degree, transfer, or certificate goals.

5. Class Registration: Once you've completed the assessment and planning session, you'll use the Corsair Connect portal to register for classes. Payment of your courses is required upon registration. Make sure you're aware of the drop and refund deadlines if you happen to change your mind about any courses.

6. ID Card: Lastly, don't forget to take your student ID photo at the Bursar's Office once you've registered. You'll need your ID for campus activities, library use, and other on-campus services.

Hope this helps, and wishing you the best of luck with your application!
