Is it okay to reuse college essays for a transfer application?

I wrote some strong essays when I first applied to college. Is it acceptable to reuse parts of them for a transfer application, or should I create entirely new essays? What’s the best approach?

Reuse can certainly happen, especially if you believe your earlier essays were strong. However, be careful to ensure that the essays still hold true to your current experience and demonstrate your reasons for wanting to transfer. It's not like copying and pasting old work verbatim, but rather revising and reshaping it to better fit your current situation.

There's an important point to remember: transfer essays prompt you to clarify why you want to shift schools, which admissions officers look at carefully. You should explain how your academic and personal interests have developed or changed, why your current college or university couldn't fulfill those interests or aspirations, and how the college to which you are applying will help you achieve your goals. If the original pieces don't necessarily capture these points, you should definitely create new essays or tweak the old ones to ensure they do.

To put it simply, be sure the essays align with your current experience and goals, and they answer the question being asked. For instance, if the school wants to know why you're transferring there specifically, an answer about how you've matured since your last college app isn't very helpful. Verify the specifics asked in the prompts and cater your responses accordingly. The utmost importance is that your essays accurately reflect and articulate your reasons for transferring, your future goals, and how the new college or university can help you achieve those goals.
