Can I Not Transfer My High School College Credits?

I took some college courses in high school but don't think they fit my current academic plan. Is it possible to not transfer these credits, or do they automatically transfer with me to a new college?

Transferring college credits you earned in high school is largely in your control. Usually, the process of transferring credits involves sending your college transcript (from the institution where you earned these credits) to the college you are attending or planning to attend. If you choose not to send in that transcript, then in most cases the college won't have any way of knowing about those credits.

However, some schools may require you to report all postsecondary coursework, including dual-enrollment classes, during the admission process. Therefore, you should check with your prospective college's admissions office to understand their policy.

Even if you do report these credits or send in the college transcript, it doesn't automatically mean the credits will be applied towards your new degree plan. The decision of accepting college credits is at the discretion of the receiving institution and varies from one school to another. They usually review the coursework to see if it aligns with their academic standards and curriculum before deciding whether to accept the credits or not.

Ultimately, whether those credit hours apply to your degree plan depends on your college's policies and the relevancy of the courses to your chosen major. Keep in mind that not transferring credits might mean you need to take more classes to fulfill degree requirements, which could potentially lengthen your time in college. It would be beneficial to have a thorough discussion with your academic advisor about this. They can provide guidance tailored to your unique course of study and academic goals.
