Do university credits transfer to community college?

I'm considering switching from a university to a community college and I'm wondering if my credits will transfer over. Has anyone done this before and have any advice? I really don't want to lose any credits if possible.

Generally, credits earned in a university course can be transferred to a community college. However, the ultimate decision for whether specific credits transfer rests with the receiving institution, in this case, your prospective community college.

As an initial step, you might want to reach out to the registrar or the admissions office at the community college to discuss your specific situation. They can guide you through their credit evaluation process and you may even send over your existing transcripts for a preliminary review. Keep in mind that the course content must typically be similar or equivalent for the credits to transfer, and the grade you received in the course may also play a factor.

One additional piece of advice is to try and get some of this conversation documented. So even if you do speak to someone over the phone, your transfer agreement should ideally be in writing to avoid any discrepancies or misunderstandings later on.

Overall, while many students do transfer credits from a university to a community college, it's important to keep in mind that the process can vary from one institution to another. Research and thorough communication with the prospective school is key to making such a transition as smooth as possible.
