Community College Transfer to CSU: What's the Process?

I'm attending a community college and considering transferring to a California State University (CSU). Can anyone share insights on the process? What should I focus on to ensure a smooth transition and meet the transfer requirements?

Transferring from a community college to a CSU is a very common path and there's a well-defined pathway for students doing this.

First let's talk about basic eligibility. The Cal State system requires a 2.0 GPA for transfer applicants. You'll also have to meet certain course requirements, which are defined by the CSU General Education Breadth or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC). You'll need to complete 60 transferable semester (or 90 quarter) units, including coursework in areas such as written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and mathematics or quantitative reasoning.

A key tool for California community college students transferring to CSUs is the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT). Certain associate degrees offered at California Community Colleges are designed to align your coursework with the CSU General Education requirements, and guarantee admission to a CSU. Although it doesn't guarantee admission to particular campuses or majors, it does optimize your chances and make the application process smoother.

For your application, you'll use the Cal State Apply website, where you fill in your personal information, academic history, and extracurriculars. A notable difference to other college applications is that Cal State schools do not require essays or letters of recommendation.

Ensure good communication with both your community college guidance counselor and the admissions office at the CSU you're interested in. They'll help provide accurate, up-to-date information to smooth out any transfer kinks in the process. Best of luck on your academic journey!
