How can you transfer to Skidmore College from a community college?

I'm attending a community college right now and Skidmore College is my dream school. I'm looking for advice on what the transfer process entails and if it's a realistic option. Any tips or info would be useful!

Transferring into four-year institutions from a community college is absolutely a realistic option and happens quite frequently! Skidmore College, like many other four-year institutions, welcomes transfer students. Do note, however, that Skidmore does not have articulated transfer agreements with any community college, so there is no guaranteed admission. Here are some steps to guide you through the transfer process:

1. Academic Requirements: Focus on creating a strong academic record at your current community college. Skidmore looks at a candidate’s course load, grades, major, and whether you have shown consistent academic growth. They are most interested in seeing that you have challenged yourself academically and that you have done well in those challenges. Try to focus on taking courses that are liberal arts in nature as Skidmore is a liberal arts college.

2. Course Selection: While not imperative, it would be beneficial to choose courses that closely match or are equivalent to the courses offered in the first two years at Skidmore. This way, you can ensure maximum credit can be transferred. You will need to have a minimum of 60 credits applicable to a Skidmore degree to transfer.

3. Create your Portfolio: Skidmore requires a few additional pieces as part of their transfer application process. This includes your high school and all college transcripts, a college official's recommendation, one faculty recommendation, and the Transfer College Report. If you've decided on a major, it might be beneficial to seek your faculty recommendation from a professor in a relevant subject.

4. Transfer Application: Skidmore accepts applications for transfer in both the Fall and Spring Semesters. The deadlines are November 15 for the Spring semester and April 1 for the Fall Semester. Skidmore uses the Common Application for transfer students, so you'll fill out the application and the Skidmore transfer supplement on the same platform.

5. Extracurriculars and Work Experience: Skidmore sees involvement outside of the classroom as an important aspect of a strong community. Highlight your contributions during your time at the community college as this will demonstrate your ability to be a valuable addition to Skidmore’s community.

6. Financial Aid: Skidmore meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, including transfer students. So, don't forget to file your FAFSA and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile form if you’re considering seeking financial aid.

Remember, it's important to maintain open communication with the Skidmore Admissions Office throughout the process. They can offer advice and assist with any questions or concerns. And as you prepare for your application, seek support and guidance from your community college advisors as well. They can be an invaluable resource during this process. Good luck!
