Tips for transferring from Cerritos College to UCLA?

I'm planning on transferring to UCLA from Cerritos College sometime after I complete my AA. Does anyone know what specific requirements or challenges I should be aware of while preparing my application?

An initiative to consider is the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program offered by some of the UC schools, which guarantees admissions to students from California Community Colleges like Cerritos, given that they meet certain eligibility requirements. However, it's important to note that UCLA does not participate in the TAG program.

The first thing to examine is the major preparation coursework required for your intended major at UCLA. Each major has specific prerequisites that you must complete at Cerritos College prior to transferring. Make certain you’re on track with these by discussing them with your academic advisor. Do not forget that IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) can be used for UC schools to fulfill the general education requirements.

Work on maintaining a high GPA. Although the minimum GPA requirement for transfer applicants to UCLA is 2.4 for California residents, the average GPA of admitted students is much higher. Generally, UCLA expects you to be at the top of your class, and to excel in your college prep courses.

Being involved in extracurricular activities can also strengthen your application. Whether they're on-campus clubs and organizations, community service projects, or holding a part-time job, UCLA values applicants who are well-rounded and exhibit leadership qualities.

Ensure that your application essays clearly convey your personal story and fit with UCLA. Make certain you address why you wish to transfer, your academic goals, and how UCLA would aid you in achieving those goals. Remember, UC schools are not only looking for academic brilliance but also how students can contribute to the university community.

Transferring schools can seem like a monumental task, but with careful planning, meeting all the prerequisites, and presenting a well-rounded application, it can be a rewarding journey. Good luck!
