Options for Transferring with an Associate's Degree

I'm about to complete my associate's degree and want to transfer to a four-year college. Does having an associate's make the process easier or guarantee admissions anywhere? Would love to know what my options are!

You're in a strong position with an associate's degree under your belt as many four-year institutions value students who've demonstrated the ability to succeed at the college level. However, having an associate's degree does not necessarily guarantee admission into a four-year institution since each university has its transfer policies.

Many community colleges have articulation agreements with four-year institutions to facilitate credit transfers and ensure seamless progressions. These arrangements are often known as 2+2 programs, they assume you'll spend 2 years at a community college, followed by 2 years at a four-year institution. These agreements often contain guarantees of admission given certain criteria are met, like maintaining a specific GPA but it, of course, depends on the specific institutions involved.

You'll want to research specific transfer policies at your intended institutions to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Request an appointment with the transfer admissions counselor at the four-year institution you're considering to discuss transfer procedures and make sure that the majority of your credits will successfully transfer.

Before transferring, you might also want to consider the financial impact. Although transferring can provide a pathway to a four-year degree in a more affordable manner, some universities may limit financial aid for transfer students, which will be important to take into account when making your decision.

Overall, while having an associate's degree does provide you with certain advantages, it is important to plan carefully and make certain you understand each school's transfer procedures and requirements.
