Can I transfer to a CSU without going through a community college?

I'm interested in attending a CSU, but I'm not sure if I need to go to a community college first. Is direct transfer possible, or is community college a necessary step in the process?

You can transfer to a CSU (California State University) without going through community college. While many students do choose the path of attending community college and then transferring to a CSU as part of the TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) program, it is not a required step. You can transfer from another four-year institution, for instance.

However, there are some things you should keep in mind. First, you must have at least 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) to be considered as an upper-division transfer student. These units should majorly consist of courses that meet the CSU general education requirements (breadth requirements), along with lower division courses that are aligned with your intended CSU major.

Furthermore, you have to be in good academic standing at the institution you're transferring from, and you must possess at least a 2.0 GPA in your CSU-transferable courses. Also, bear in mind that each CSU campus and each CSU major has their unique entry-level requirements, so check with the specific CSU campus admissions office you are interested in for detailed instruction.

The advantage of the community college to CSU pathway is the opportunity it provides to enhance your academic record, potentially obtain an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), and enjoy the benefits of the TAG program. However, if you feel confident with your current academic standings at a four-year institution, applying as an upper-division transfer student might be a convenient choice for you.
