Does your GPA reset when transferring colleges?

I'm considering transferring to a different college and I'm confused about how GPA works in this process. Do you get a clean slate GPA-wise when you transfer, or do your previous grades follow you?

When you transfer to a different college, your GPA doesn't exactly "reset" or "follow" you in the direct sense. If you are accepted into another college, that college will most likely reset your GPA for the work you do while attending that school.

However, your previous academic record from your former institution doesn't vanish. Your academic record from the previous institution stays on your transcript, as do the grades you received and your GPA from that college. Your grades will not be recalculated by your new school, but they'll still be visible on academic records that you may be asked to provide in the future, like when applying to graduate schools or for certain jobs.

So in essence, you'll start fresh at the new institution GPA-wise for the coursework done there, but your past academic record is still valuable and can impact opportunities down the line.

It's always good to chat with the admissions or registrar's office at your prospective transfer school to fully understand how they handle GPAs for transfer students. Some may have different policies regarding transfer credit and GPAs.
