Transferring with Computer Science from College of the Canyons

I'm planning to start my computer science studies at the College of the Canyons. Can someone explain the transfer course requirements for this major? I'm aiming for a top CSU, so any tips on course selection would help!

Hello! It sounds like you have a solid start on your path to studying computer science. While each California State University (CSU) campus will have different course recommendations for transfer students, most will have similar core classes that are important for CS majors.

Generally, as a computer science transfer student, you will likely need to take the following classes:

1. Calculus I (and possibly Calculus II, depending on the school)

2. General Physics (with lab)

3. Introduction to Computer Programming (Java or C++)

4. Data Structures

5. Computer Architecture and Assembly Language

6. Discrete Mathematics

Don't forget to take general education requirements, these can also transfer and will help you graduate in a timely manner after transferring.

One important resource you should also consider is Assist.org. This is the official repository of articulation for California’s public colleges and universities. You can use Assist to find out which classes at College of the Canyons will fulfill lower-division major requirements at the CSUs you're targeting.

Additionally, you will definitely want to check out the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) programs available. Certain CSUs have agreements with community colleges like College of the Canyons where, if you meet certain criteria, you will get guaranteed admission.

Finally, remember the importance of maintaining a strong GPA – not only in your major classes but in all of your classes. Computer Science is a popular major, so admissions can be more competitive than other fields.

Best of luck with your studies!
