What are the transfer requirements for computer science at College Park?

I'm currently in community college and considering transferring to College Park for computer science. Can anyone share what the specific requirements are for transfers into the CS program? Any tips on making my application stronger would also be appreciated!

Sure, in terms of prerequisites to transfer to the University of Maryland College Park's Computer Science program, you should ideally have taken courses equivalent to:

1. Calculus I (MATH 140)

2. Calculus II (MATH 141)

3. Object-Oriented Programming I (CMSC 131) and II (CMSC 132), or equivalent.

These are core classes that would set you up for upper-level computer science coursework at College Park. They're not absolutely required, but having them completed will strengthen your application and set you up for success if admitted.

In terms of GPA, while the University of Maryland, College Park does not state a specific minimum GPA requirement, competitive applicants usually have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. That being said, transfer admission is holistic and other factors will also play into their decision.

For making your application stronger, consider focusing on the following aspects:

- Essays: Share why you're passionate about computer science, what experiences or courses have confirmed this interest, and how studying at College Park can help you achieve your academic and future career goals.

- Extracurricular Activities: If you've been involved in relevant clubs, activities, or projects (like coding competitions, or independent programming projects), be sure to highlight them in your application.

- Letters of Recommendation: If possible, obtain letters from professors who can vouch for your academic abilities, particularly in math and computer science.

Lastly, remember that each transfer application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and admission can be competitive. Showing a strong motivation for computer science and clearly laying out what you've done to prepare for upper-level coursework in the field can go a long way. Good luck with your application!
