Transferring AP credits to out-of-state colleges

I'm exploring colleges in various states and I'm unsure about how my AP credits will transfer. Does the College Board give guidelines on this, or should I check directly with each college's admission office?

The College Board does not provide specific guidelines on how AP credits transfer because that's determined on a college-by-college basis. Each university or college has its own AP credit policy. Some may allow a score of 3 or higher to earn college credit, while others may require a 4 or a 5. The credits could be used to satisfy required courses or electives depending on the institution's policy.

The best way to find out how your AP scores might potentially transfer is to check directly with each college's admission office or to use the AP Credit Policy search on the College Board's website. The search tool can provide the credit policy of many schools, but if the school is not listed or the information isn't clear, reach out to the school directly. The college's Admissions or Registrar's office is typically the right place to ask.

Just remember that having AP credits doesn't guarantee they'll be accepted at every institution you apply to. This is especially the case when looking at out-of-state or private schools, which may not be mandated to accept them in the same way in-state public universities are. It's always a good idea to check the policies of the specific institutions you're interested in.
