What are Colorado community college guaranteed transfer courses?

I'm currently enrolled in a Colorado community college and I'm curious about guaranteed transfer courses. How do these courses work, and are they accepted by all Colorado universities?

Guaranteed transfer courses, or "gtPATHWAYS" courses in Colorado, certainly bring some peace of mind when considering a transfer to a 4-year institution in the same state. These courses are part of a statewide transferred articulation agreement that was designed to ease the transfer process from a community college to a four-year institution within Colorado.

Here's the gist of it: as long as you receive a grade of C- or better in any course that falls under the guaranteed transfer category, it is guaranteed to transfer and count towards the general education requirements at any Colorado public university or college, and participating private institutions as well. This guarantee doesn't extend to out-of-state schools or Colorado schools that have not signed onto the statewide agreement.

The areas of general education covered in the guaranteed transfer program include fields like Communication, Behavioral Sciences, History, Biological & Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Arts & Humanities, and Social & Behavioral Sciences.

You can term these courses as a sort of insurance for your future education plans, ensuring that you don't waste time or money by retaking completed general education coursework upon transferring to a four-year institution.

However, bear in mind that while these courses are guaranteed to fulfill general education requirements, they may not necessarily fulfill course requirements for specific majors. For instance, if you're interested in majoring in Biology, a general science course might fulfill a general education requirement but not a Biology major requirement.

Like always, you'll want to work closely with academic advisors both at your current institution and at potential future four-year institutions to ensure that you're meeting all necessary requirements, particularly if you already have a specific major or program in mind.
