Transferring from Community College to SCAD?

I'm thinking about starting at a community college and then transferring to Savannah College of Art and Design. Does anyone know how the transfer process works? Are there specific courses I should take to make the transition smoother?

Transfer admissions to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) are fairly straightforward. If you're attending a community college with the intention to transfer, there are a few things that you should keep in mind.

1. Coursework: SCAD accepts transfer credits from accredited postsecondary institutions. To get a better idea of which courses will transfer, it's usually a good idea to work closely with your academic advisor at the community college. Your advisor should have information on which courses have been accepted in the past and can help guide you accordingly. You would generally want to focus on completing your general education requirements (like English, math), as well as taking foundational art or design courses that align with your intended major at SCAD.

2. GPA: While SCAD does not list a minimum GPA for transfer students, higher is usually better when transferring into competitive programs. Focus on doing well in all your courses to ensure your transfer application is as strong as possible.

3. Portfolio: As an art and design school, SCAD requires a portfolio for some of its programs. The portfolio will be a crucial part of your transfer application, as it gives the admissions committee a sense of your creative abilities and potential. The portfolio should reflect your best work and show a range of skills, concepts, and techniques relevant to your desired major.

4. Transfer application: The transfer application process isn't much different from the standard undergraduate application process. You'll need to submit an application (via the Common App or directly through the SCAD website), your high school transcripts, college transcripts, a statement of purpose, and possibly a portfolio depending on your intended major.

A useful resource in your situation could be the SCAD transfer guide, as well as the transfer credit policy on the SCAD website. These will give you more detailed information about what they're looking for in transfer students and the credits they are likely to accept. You can also reach out to the SCAD admissions department for more personalized guidance.

In all, transferring to SCAD from a community college is a common route, and with careful planning, it can be a smooth transition.
