Requirements for nursing transfer from El Camino College

I'm pursuing nursing at El Camino College and wondering about the transfer process to a CSU. Does anyone know if IGETC is necessary or beneficial for this transfer? I'd love to hear any insights or personal experiences.

Hello! When transferring from El Camino College to a California State University (CSU), completing the IGETC is beneficial but not always necessary.

The IGETC, or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, is a series of courses California community college students can complete to satisfy lower-division general education requirements for CSU or UC.

For nursing programs, however, program-specific prerequisites may often supersede the general education requirements. Many nursing programs will require certain prerequisite science courses, such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology, which are not part of the standard IGETC, but are required more universally for nursing programs.

Therefore, while completing the IGETC can streamline the transfer process in general, it's crucial to look at the specific requirements for the nursing program at the CSU you're planning to transfer to. Every CSU nursing program can have different transfer requirements. Make sure to reach out to the admissions office of the school you're interested in, or visit their website, to confirm their specific needs.

Remember, while you can self-report your grades on your CSU application, you’ll need to send your final transcripts after you confirm your transfer. Oh, and the application filing period for CSUs is typically from October 1 to November 30.

Best of luck with your transfer process!
