Tips for visual arts transfer to UCSD?

Planning to start at a community college and eventually transfer into UCSD's visual arts program. Does anyone have advice on which classes I should prioritize or any additional elements I need to prepare for a strong application?

That's a great goal, transferring to UCSD's visual arts program! First, regarding the classes you should prioritize, it would be best to start with the general education (GE) requirements and prerequisites for UCSD’s Visual Arts program. UCSD and other UC schools recommend completing the ‘Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum’ (IGETC) which covers broad areas like Communication, Physical and Biological Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and others. These are classes that all UC students, regardless of major, are expected to take.

Delving deeper into your Visual Arts major, you'll want to complete any lower-division prerequisites for that major at your community college. The UC Transfer Admission Planner (TAP) or ASSIST.org is a great tool for finding which courses at your current college correspond with the prerequisites at UCSD. It's generally recommended that, for a Visual Arts major, you take foundational art classes like Drawing and painting, as well as art history courses.

In addition to academics, your application would be stronger with a well-developed portfolio. Your portfolio should showcase your mastery of various forms and techniques and demonstrate your understanding of, and connection to the concept or process involved in, creating each piece. It's like the art equivalent of an essay; in addition to demonstrating your skills, it gives the admissions committee insight into who you are as an artist. They don't just want to see that you're technically gifted; they want to see that you have something unique to say.

Lastly, when you do eventually apply, make sure your personal insight questions highlight why you’re suited to be a Visual Arts major, what experiences led you to this point, and how you plan to use your degree in the future. Your interest in Visual Arts and the experiences you've had around it should be a prominent theme.

Remember that admissions decisions are based on a comprehensive review of your application, including your academic performance, the insight questions, and your portfolio for a Visual Arts major. Best of luck with your academics and artistic pursuits!
