How to transfer from community college to UMass?

I'm planning to attend community college first but want to transfer to UMass. Can anyone share details about what is needed in terms of GPA, credits, and any specific courses I should take?

Transferring from a community college to the University of Massachusetts (UMass) system is not uncommon and it can be a strategic way to get your bachelor’s degree.

First, it's important to know there are five UMass campuses: Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, and the Medical School in Worcester. Each has different requirements, so be sure to check the specifics based on the university you're targeting.

I can highlight some generally important things to keep in mind when considering a transfer:

1. Earn an Associate Degree: UMass has an agreement with Massachusetts Community Colleges called the "MassTransfer Program". Under this program, if you earn an associate degree at a Massachusetts community college with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, you will benefit from guaranteed admission to UMass. You need to complete at least 30 credits to be eligible as a transfer student.

2. Ensure Credits Transfer: Select your courses at community college keeping in mind that you plan on transferring. I recommend connecting with your community college adviser to make sure each credit will transfer to UMass. As an extra tip, you could also use transferology.com to check if a course will transfer to UMass.

3. Achieve a Competitive GPA: While you need just a 2.0 GPA for the MassTransfer Program, to be competitive, aiming for a GPA above 3.0 would be advantageous, especially for UMass Amherst, widely recognized as the most academically prestigious of the UMass campuses.

4. Fulfill General Education Requirements: The majority of students transfer after completing their Associate Degree which satisfies UMass's general education requirements. However, if you plan on transferring before finishing an Associate Degree, make sure to fill the university’s general education requirements.

5. Statement of Purpose: As part of your application, you'll need to write a statement of purpose. This is your chance to explain your future goals, why you want to attend UMass, and any challenges you’ve faced.

6. Letters of recommendation: Have one or two professors or employers who know you well write your letters of recommendation. They can attest to your learning style, work ethic, and dedication.

Expect an application fee when submitting your application. Financial aid is also available so be sure to fill out your FAFSA as soon as you start the application.

Remember that each UMass campus has its own specifics, so be sure to check each school's transfer student page for details. The transfer process takes time. Start planning early and ask for help from your community college advisor when you need it. Good luck!
