NMSF Scholarships: What's the process?

Hey everyone, I've been hearing about these National Merit Scholarships (NMSF) for a while now. Can someone explain to me the process of applying for them, and what the eligibility criteria are? Thanks in advance!

Hello! I'd be happy to explain the National Merit Scholarship process and eligibility criteria.

1. Taking the PSAT/NMSQT: The first step in becoming a National Merit Scholar is to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during your junior year of high school. This standardized test serves as the initial screening for National Merit Scholarship eligibility. It's important to prepare well and perform your best on the test.

2. Become a Semifinalist: After taking the PSAT/NMSQT, a Selection Index score is calculated, which ranges from 48 to 228. Each state has its own cutoff score, which varies from year to year, but it's normally in the range of 209-228. Students who score above their state's cutoff score will be named National Merit Semifinalists, typically announced in September the following year. Around 16,000 students achieve Semifinalist status each year.

3. Complete the National Merit Scholarship Application: To proceed to the next round, Semifinalists must submit a detailed National Merit Scholarship Application. This application includes information about your academic achievements, extracurriculars, and a personal essay, as well as an endorsement from your school.

4. Becoming a Finalist: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) reviews all applications and selects about 15,000 finalists. It's important to maintain high academic standards after submitting your application, as your grades will be considered.

5. SAT Score Confirmation: To be considered a finalist, you must take the SAT or ACT as a high school junior or senior and have your scores sent directly to the NMSC. Your SAT/ACT scores must be within a reasonable range of your PSAT/NMSQT scores to confirm your scores.

6. Scholarships: The NMSC offers three types of scholarships - National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarships. If you become a finalist, you will be considered for these scholarships. The NMSC will notify you around March or April if you have been awarded a scholarship.
